AKEELAH AND THE BEE

1) What do you think of the movie in term of entertainment value?

I am not a movie maniac like other teens, but i do consider entertainment. I believe, a good entertainment should include moral values and attention-grabbing
for people to get entertained and motivated. In term of movie production, i would say the story line is ordinary, cliche, but the message intended in the movie make me hold to the seat until the end. Nowadays, moral values has deteriorated, and since movie become very influential entertainment worldwide, this type of movie should be released more.

2) How does it affect you as you are taking B. Ed TESL course now?

This movie affect me on how to deal with school environment. On how motivation is important to help students to learn determination to become consistent. Akeela's coach was a good example for teachers to react with such student who at first very arrogant. Teacher must be good and able to show nobility in all aspects. In the movie, Akeela was seen as an unfortunate child. Brought up by confused single mother and live in problematic family. The reason she became rebellious was because unsettled problem at home, however she still succeed. Luckily she had good teachers around that made her going. That is why her teachers deserved respect.

3) How does it affect you if you relate the story in the movie to the teachers whom you know
in the past?

I like this question. I am very long to share about many great teachers i have encountered. A lot of teachers contribute to my development in studies but one that so significant is Puan Suriyani. A beautiful, thoughtful, tolerance English teacher but strict. She is the teacher who realized me about potentials that everyone has to shine. In class, she never told us directly the importance of English Language, but Puan Suriyani taught us a real lesson. We should be patience in learning, althought people look at us with disdain, we still can go far if we pursue for that. That is what i see in the character of Akeela's coach.

4) What kind of practical/theoretical lesson that you learned after viewing this movie.

There can be miracle when you believe. I learn that attitudes empowers every dreams we want to achieve. School system should touches students holistically by emphasizing in their talent not by their weakness.

MY FAVOURITE STORY

The story is about King Midas, the richest man in the universe that era who loved to collect gold. Nothing could satisfy him most but gold, gold and gold. One day, a fairy came to visit the king and offerred him a golden touch but reminded him about the consequences he might faced later. King Midas was determined and would dare to undergo the risk.

The next morning, he woke up and touched his thing and got shocked to see all turned into gold. The fairy was true. He became excited and started to touch everything until he accidentially turned his daughter to gold. This is the climax of the story which led to King Midas’s realization of his greediness. The story ended with the losing of King Midas's magic touch but the return of his only precious, his daughter

Why I like the story?

Not many fables talk about parental value. This what make the story different. i found the gold is a symbol of wealth that lots of adults forward to have. It will relates to their parents’ situation in reality whereby they are so keen to seek for career and forget about the role as parents to their children. Very relevant in nowadays context.

Does the story suitable for the children?

The story is suitable especially the lesson portrays in the story. One should not be greedy. The character of daughter in the story would be very beneficial, to make them realize the importance of family and attention from parents.

The Element

Simple language is being used make it easy for readers to understand.

Portrayal of characters

Role of a father. As a King, he did react as a good father, but the fact that he is also human indulge him in the sin of greediness which at one point could destroy his eternal love, his daughter. In the end, that would be a strong reason for him to appreciate others more rather that GOLD!!

REVIEW OF TWO STORIES

i would give five star to this short story. Credit to Sheena Knowles for the amazing masterpiece of writing. the moment Dr Jaya introduced the story, i already astonished with the pictures. flipping through all the pages, ensure readers a real enjoyment to see various colours and pictures beautifully illustrated by Rod Clement. i do sure, students will love it.

Besides, the used of rhythm to tell the story portrays creativity which can develop sense of literature to the children. An early exposure to literature may cause interest to read. Wonderful!

i found difference by the way Sheena Knowles teaches readers the moral value. Of course the ending is nice but i like part where she started to find suitable job. in that, the sympathetic emotions evoked me everytime i saw her capability had been under estimated by human. Therefore, i noticed, not only female should realize that family is apparently vital but as human, never say bad to others. We are having the equal rights but choose only the rights.

Hoho, THE GRUFFOLO is an intelligent story reminded me of Malay fable, Sang Kancil dan Sang Buaya. Like the story Edwina the Emu, both stories used animals to portray values to the readers. Plus, this story also had rhyme in every lines. It is true that children would engage to the text better when they see cute pictures like animals.

one thing i found unique was the imagination of the gruffalo suddenly existed. Unlike other short stories there was a twist. As a reader, I also felt shocked, and thought the mouse would pay for all his lies. However, Axel Scheffler saved the atmosphere by giving insight to the mouse to escape from the gruffolo.

The tricks were brilliant and i love the ending whereby the mouse managed to fool around his enemies by using gruffola and managed to fool around the gruffolo by using his enemies. Splendid work!
